Question

A heavy nucleus X of mass number 240 and binding energy per nucleon 7.6Me is split into two fragment Y and Z of mass numbers 110 and 130. The binding energy per nucleon in Y and Z is 8.5MeV per nucleon. Calculate the energy Q released per fission in MeV.

Solution

Energy released per nucleon is Q=bindingenergyofproductsbindingenergyofreactants

Here X splits into Y and Z.

So, Q=(MY+MZ)c2MXc2

Q=(110+130)8.5240×7.6

Q=(240×8.5)1824

Q=216Mev
