Question

A hockey ball of mass 200g is traveling at 10 m/s and is struck by a hockey stick, so as to return it along its original path with a velocity of 50 m/s. Calculate the change of momentum occurred in the motion of hockey ball by the force applied by the hockey stick.

Solution

Initial Situation:––––––––––––––––
Mass of the hockey ball m=200 g=0.2 kg
Velocity of the ball v1=10 m/s
Thus, initial momentum of the ball is P1=mv1=0.2×10=2 kgm/s

Final Situation:–––––––––––––––
Mass of the hockey ball m=200 g=0.2 kg
Velocity of the ball v2=50 m/s
Thus, final momentum of the ball is P2=mv2=0.2×50=10 kgm/s

The hockey ball is returned to its initial path after being hit by the stick. Therefore, the direction of the initial momentum and the final momentum is opposite.
The change in the momentum=ΔP=P2(P1)=P2+P1=2+10=12 kgm/s
