Tobacco plants are short day plants. They require less day and more night periods to bloom. The dark period has to be around 14-16 hours .The plant flowers on receiving the critical dark period. So they are called short -day plants.
It will bloom only when that limit of dark period is reached. So when the tobacco plant got the critical period of darkness , its leaves produce certain chemicals which will bring flowering of the plant.
