Solution

(a) Lightning conductor a simple device used to protect tall buildings from the lightning. Lightning conductor consists of a long thick copper rod passing through the building to ground. The lower end of the rod is connected to a copper plate buried deeply into the ground. It is also called a lightning attractor or Franklin rod and was invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1749 as part of his groundbreaking exploration of electricity.

(b) Lightning is a very heavy flow of charge between clouds or between clouds and earth. In hilly areas clouds are comparatively closer to the ground than in the plains. Therefore lightning strikes are more frequent in hilly areas.
