Question

(a) How will you convert the following:
(i) Propanone to Propan 2ol
(ii) Ethanal to 2hydroxy propanoic acid
(iii) Toluene to benzoic acid
(b) Given simple chemical test to distinguish between:
(i) Pentan-2-one and Pentan3one
(ii) Ethanal and Propanal

Solution

(a)
i) Propanone to Propan-2-ol
OOH|||CH3CCH3Na/alcohol−−−−−−CH3CHCH3

ii) Ethanal to 2-Hyroxypropanoic acid
H|CH3C=OH+.CN−−−−H|CH3COHH+H2O−−−−|CNOH|CH3CHCOOH

iii) Toluene to benzoic acid (ref. image )

(b)
i) Pentan-2-one and Pentan-3-one
O||CH3CCH2CH2CH3 and O||CH3CH2CCH2CH3

By Iodoform Test
Pentan-2-one being a methyl ketone when treated with NaOl (I2/NaOH) gives yellow precipitate of iodoform but pentan-3-one does

O||CH3CH2CH2pentan2eneCCH3+3NaOICH3CH2CH2COONa+CHI3Iodoform(yellowppt)+2NaOH

O||CH3CH2CPentan3eneCH2CH3NaOI−−No yellow precipitate of CHI3

ii) Ethanal and Propanal
O||CH3CH and O||CH3CH2CH
