A huge majority of the world's species are
Of the total number of species catalogued so far, close to 80% are animals and 20% are plants. Now if we are to look at the diversity in each of these, more than 95% of the animals are invertebrates and a majority of these are insects. In fact, there are 950,000 species of insects that have been identified, that is, insects make up close to 80% of the invertebrate species on the planet. The other notable taxa are the fishes, which form close to 50% of the vertebrates and the angiosperms that form more than 85% of the total plant species.
