Question

A human bone is subjected to a compressive force of 5.0×105N. The bone is 25cm long and has an approximate cross sectional area of 4.0cm2. If the ultimate compressive strength of the bone is 1.70×108N/m2, will the bone be compressed or will it break under this force?

Solution

F=5×105N
A=4×104m2
l=l4m
Smax(bone) =1.7×108N/m2
SForce=5×1054×104=54×109
=504×108N/m
=12.5×108N/m
SForce>Smax(bone)
Therefore bone will break.
