Question

A hydraulic lift is used to lift a car of mass 3000 kg. The cross-sectional area of the lift on which the car is supported is 5×102m. What is the pressure on the smaller piston, if both the pistons are at the same horizontal level?
Take g=10 ms2.

Solution

The radius of the "Smaller piston " is not given here so we have to assume that both pistons are identical. So, m=3000 kg, A= 5×102
ThereforeF=mg=3000×10=30,000N
Therefore, assuming both pistons are identical and on the same horizontal height, pressure on each piston =F2A=3,00,000N/m2
