A hydrocarbon contains 10.5 g of carbon per 1 g of H. One litre vapours of hydrocarbon with molar mass 92 at 127∘C and 1 atm pressure weighs 2.8 g. Find molecular formula of hydrocarbon.
From the weights of Carbons and Hydrogen,
C : H
10.5: 1 = 11.5g
Molar mass⇒M=92g
11.5 g of compound has 1g of H.
∴ 92 g of compound has 92×111.5 = 8 g of H
8 g of H ⇒ 8g - atom of H
Remaining 84g of C = ⇒ 8412 = 7 g atom of C.
∴ Formula is C7H8
