Hydrogen is a monovalent atom just like alkali metal atoms. It forms compounds like halides, oxides, etc. with same formulae as alkali metals. It forms halides (HX) like HCl, HF, etc. just like alkali metals form metal halides with the formula MX, e.g. LiCl, NaCl, etc.
