Question

A is a binary compound of a univalent metal. When 1.422g of A reacts completely with 0.321g of sulphur in an evacuated and sealed tube, 1.743g of a white crystalline solid B produces, which produces a hydrated double salt C with Al2(SO4)3. Identify A,B, and C.

Solution

Alum has Al2(SO4)3 and M2SO4.
0.321g sulphur 1.743g of metal sulphate
32.1g sulphur1.7430.321×32.1=174.3g metal sulphate
For M2SO4,
2M+32+64=174.3
or M=39.
Which is the atomic mass of K.
B is K2SO4
C is K2SO4Al2(SO4)324H2O
The formula K2SO4 shows that S has reacted with 2 mol of
KO2.
2KO2+SK2SO4
0.321g sulphur 1.422g of metal oxide.
32.1 sulphur 1.4220.321×32.1=142.2 metal oxide
For 2KO2
Mass =2(39+32)=142
C is KO2
