The high molecular weight solutes are retained and hence known as retentate. While the low molecular weight solute or water pass through the semipermeable membrane and hence known as permeate. Ultra filtration method is specially used in industries to purify colloidal solutions, where the macromolecules have a weight of around 105 dalton.
