Solution

Given, diagonal of the square=40 cm
If a is the side of the square, then:
a2+a2=40
a=202 cm

The square is divided into 4 parts, 2 of which are white and 2 are dark.
Area of each quadrant of square =14×Area of square

=14×202×202

=200cm2

Area of white paper used in the kite=2×200 cm2=400 cm2

Calculate the area of the isosceles triangle at the bottom part using Heron's formula:
a=13cm,b=13cm,c=10 cm
s=a+b+c2=18cm

Area of shaded isosceles triangle=s(sa)(sb)(sc)
=18(1813)(1813)(1810)
=60cm2

Area of darker paper used= Area of 2 quadrants of the square + Area of isosceles triangle
=(400+60) cm2
=460 cm2
