Question

A large coal fired power station produces 2000MW of electrical energy.A wind turbine with 33 m blades can produce 300kW.
i)How many turbines would be needed to replace the power station
ii)Why,in actual practice this number of turbines coupd nit replace coal powered power station

Solution

a wind turbine with (33m blades:- not needed in any calculation just to confuse )

one wind turbine produce 300KW = 3,00,000W

coal fired power station produce 2000MW = 2,00,00,00,000W

so the number of the wind turbine to produce equal power as coal-fired station = 2,00,00,00,000 / 3,00,000

= 6,666.667 ~ = 6667

b) efficiency of steam turbine used at the coal-fired power plant remain constant but the efficiency of wind

turbine changes due to the change in wind speed
