Question

A large homogeneous object sinks in water, it is divided into two parts, one of which is larger than the other. Will both of these parts now sink?

Solution

Yes both part will sink. Since the upthrust force depends upon the volume of liquid displaced by object. When the object is divided into two, its density remains the same and the total volume remains same. So the upthrust force on any part will be lesser than their mass.
