Question

A large open tank has two holes in the wall. One is a square hole of side 2 cm at a depth of 5 cm from the top and the other is a circular hole of radius R at a depth of 20 cm from the top. Solution

The correct option is D 8×103 m
Given that,
Side of square hole (L)=2 cm
Side of circular hole =R
Depth of square hole from top (h1)=5 cm
Depth of circular hole (h2)=20 cm

The velocity of efflux is given by
v=2gh
Since volume of water flowing out per second is same,
By using continuity equation,
a1v1=a2v2
L2(2gh1)=πR2(2gh2)
(0.02)2(2g×0.05)=πR22g×0.20
R2=(0.02)2(2g×0.05)π2g×0.20
R=0.022π=7.97×103 m8×103 m.
