Question

A lead pencil consists of a cylinder of wood with a solid cylinder of graphite filled in the interior. The diameter of the pencil is 7 mm and the diameter of the graphite is 1 mm. If the length of the pencil is 14 cm, find the volume of the wood and that of the graphite.

Solution

Radius of graphite =r=12mm=12×110=120cm

Height of graphite =h=14cm

Volume of the graphite cylinder =πr2h

=(227×120×120×14)cm3

=0.11cm3

Radius of pencil =r=72mm=72×110cm=720cm

Height of the pencil =h=14cm

Volume of the pencil =πr2h

=(227×720×720×14)cm3

=5.39cm3

Volume of wood = Volume of pencil - Volume of graphite
Volume of wood =(5.390.11)cm3=5.28cm3
