A leaf cell of a water plant was placed in a liquid other than pond water. After some time, it assumed a shape as shown in the diagram below.
Comment on the nature (tonicity) of the liquid surrounding the cell.

The liquid is a hypertonic solution. It has higher solute concentration outside the cell than the fluids inside the cell.
