Transpiration:
Transpiration is the phenomenon of evaporation of water from the plant surface. It is mainly through the stomata (90%).
Various environmental factors like temperature, light, wind, humidity and internal factors like the structure of the leaf and root-shoot ratio affect transpiration.
Transpiration not only brings about the ascent of sap but also has a cooling effect and saves the plant from heat injury.
When the transpiration rate exceeds the water absorption rate, it leads to wilting of the plant.
Though the apparatus potometer measures the rate of water uptake in plants, indirectly it is used to measure water lost by transpiration.
