Question

A light body and a heavy body have equal kinetic energy. Which one has a greater momentum?

Open in App
Solution

from given kinetic energies are equal
12m1v12=12m2v22 (m2>m1) where m1 = mass of lighter body & m2 = mass of the heavier body

v12v22=m2m1v1v2=m2m1

linear momentum of a lighter body P1=m1v1
linear momentum of the heavier body P2=m2v2
P1P2=m1v1m2v2=m1m2m2m1=m2m1×m12m22=m1m2
here linear momentum is directly proportional to its mass
heavierbody has greater momentum
