A liquid is in equilibrium with its vapour in a sealed container at a fixed temperature. The volume of the container is suddenly increased.
How do rates of evaporation and condensation change initially?

Solution
In the closed vessel at constant temperature, the rate of evaporation will remain constant. Initially, the rate of condensation will be lower as lesser number of molecules per unit volume are present in the vapour phase. Due to this, the number of collisions per unit volume with the liquid face decreases.
