Question

A liquid P of specific heat capacity 2400 J kg1 K1 and at 70C is mixed with another liquid R of specific heat capacity 1000 J kg1 K1 at 30C. After mixing, the final temperature of the mixture is 40C. Find the ratio of the mass of the liquids mixed?

Solution

Given : SP=2400Jkg1K1 and SR=1000Jkg1K1
As no heat is absorbed or released between the system and surrounding.
Thus sum of the heat absorbed between the liquids is zero.
MpSP(ΔTP)+MRSR(ΔTR)=0
Or MP(2400)(4070)+MR(1000)(4030)=0
Or MP(2400)(30)=MR(1000)(10)
We get MPMR=(1000)(10)(2400)(30)=536
