(b) Explain why sliding friction is less than static friction? [2 marks]

Solution

(a) Following are the different methods that are used for reducing the friction:
  • Polishing the surface
  • Using lubricants such as oil or grease
  • Using ball bearings instead of the surfaces sliding against each other
  • Streamlining objects (for reducing fluid friction)
(2 marks)

(b) Friction occurs due to the interlocking of irregularities present on the two surfaces in contact. When the object starts sliding, the irregularities of the moving object do not get enough time to interlock with the other surface properly. So sliding friction is slightly less than the maximum static friction that can act. (2 marks)
