Question

A long current carrying conductor of length l is placed in a uniform magnetic field strength B. If current in conductor is i A, write down the formula of force exerted on current carrying conductor. What will be the maximum force? Write its direction.

Solution

Force on the current carrying conductor place in a uniform magnetic field is given by,
F=I×Bl=IBsinθl
where θ is the angle between I and B vector,
For maximum force sinθ=1,
Fmax=IBl
Force F is always perpendicular to the plane containing I and B and its direction is given by right hand rule for cross product I×B.
