A long string having a cross-sectional area 0.8 mm2 and density 12.5 g/cm3, is subjected to a tension of 64 N along the x axis . One end of this string is attached to a vibrator, which is vibrating in a transverse direction. Find the speed of the wave travelling on the string.

Linear mass density(μ) is defined as mass per unit length of string.
μ=ml
Mass of the string will be,
m=ρ×V=ρ×A×l

The linear mass density is,
μ=ρ×A×ll=ρA
μ=(12.5×103kg/m3)×(0.80×106 m2)
μ=0.01 kg/m.

The wave speed is,
v=Tμ
v=64 N0.01 kg/m=80 m/s.
