Question

A lorry and a car moving with the same momentum are brought to rest by the application of brake, which provide equal retarding force? Which of them will come to rest in shorter time? Which will come to rest in less distance?

Solution

The initial momentum of the car is same as lorry.
Final momentum is zero for both the vehicles. So, change in momentum is same for lorryand the car. By Newton’s second law, F= ∆P/ ∆t
∆t = ∆ p/ F Time is directly proportional to the change in momentum since F is same. Hence, both will take same time to stop. Ans

(2)
The distance travelled totally depends on momentum. Body which will have more momentum or inertia will have more tendency to be in it's motion. Here both have same momentum. hence both will cover same distance.
