Question

A machine of mass m =200 kg is supported on two mounts, each of stiffness k =10 kN/m. The machine is subjected to an external force (in N) F(t)=50 cos 5t. Assuming only vertical translatory motion, the magnitude of the dynamic force (in N) transmitted from each mount to the ground is (correct to two decimal places).

Solution

m = 200 kg, k = 10 kN/m = 10000 N/m
keq=k+k=10000+10000=20000 N/m
Ft=50 cos 5 t
F0=50 N
ω=5 rad/s
ωn=keqm=20000200=100
=10 rad/s
ωωn=510=12
No damping c=0ξ=0

Transmissibility, ϵ=1+(2ξωωn)2{1(ωωn)}2+{2ξωωn}2
(ξ=0)

ϵ=FtF0
43=Ft50
Ft=2003=66.666 N
Force from each mount
=Ft2=66.6662=33.333 N
