Question

A magnetic field of 100 G (1 G = 10–4 T) is required which is uniformin a region of linear dimension about 10 cm and area of cross-sectionabout 10–3 m2. The maximum current-carrying capacity of a givencoil of wire is 15 A and the number of turns per unit length that canbe wound round a core is at most 1000 turns m–1. Suggest someappropriate design particulars of a solenoid for the required purpose.Assume the core is not ferromagnetic.

Solution

Given: The magnetic field strength is 100G, the numbers of turns per unit length are 1000 turns/m and the current in the coil 15A.

The magnetic field is given as,

B= μ 0 nI

Where, the magnetic field strength is B, the current in the coil, the numbers of turns are n and the permeability of free space is μ 0 .

By substituting the given values in the above formula, we get

B= μ 0 nI nI= 100×10 4 4π× 10 7 =7957.74A/m

Thus, one such combinations for 100G magnetic may have length 50cm, the radius 4cm, turns 400and current 10A.

Thus, there is a possibility of some adjustments with limits and design particulars.
