A man and his wife appear in an interview for two vacancies in the same post. The probability of husband's selection is 17 and the probability of wife's selection is 15. What is the probability that only one of them is selected ?

Let A= be the event that the husband is selected.
and A= be the event that the wife is selected.
Then P(A)=17 and P(B)=15
P(¯A)=117=717=67
and P(¯B)=115=515=45
Required probability=P[(AandnotB)or(BandnotA)]
=P[(Aand¯B)+(Band¯A)]
=P(A)P(¯B)+P(B)P(¯A)
=17×45+15×67
=4+635=1035=27
