The man bought a pizza let's call it x
He ate half of it therefore $\frac{x}{2}$ pizza is left
Next day he ate $\frac{1}{3}$ of what's left meaning he was left with $\frac{2}{3}$ of $\frac{x}{2}=\frac{x}{3}$
Next day he ate $\frac{1}{4}$ of what’s left meaning he was left with $\frac{3}{4}$ of $\frac{x}{3}=\frac{x}{4}$
So the piece of pizza he threw away was $\frac{1}{4}$ .
