Let $₹x$ be the amount with the man.

Money spent to buy an article is $20\%$ of $x=₹\frac{20}{100}\times x=₹0.2x$

Money left with him $=₹(x–0.2x)$

$=₹0.8x$

Now, $5\%$ of remaining amount was spent on transport.

So, the money spent on transport $=₹\frac{5}{100}\times 0.8x=₹0.04x$

And, remaining amount $=₹(0.8x–0.04x)=₹0.76x$

Now he gifted $₹120$ and he has $₹1400$ left with him.

Therefore,

$$\begin{gathered} 0.76x–120=1400 \\ \Rightarrow 0.76x=1400+120 \\ \Rightarrow 0.76x=1520 \\ \Rightarrow x=\frac{1520}{0.76} \\ \Rightarrow x=2000 \end{gathered}$$
