Solution

Determining the number of dimes and quarters.

If d is the number of dimes the man has and q is the number of quarters.

The fact that he has 14 coins mean that

d+q=14...(1)

We know that

1dimes=10centsddimes=10×dcents1quarter=25centsqquarters=25×qcents

We know that, he has $2.75or275cents means that

10d+25q=275...(2)

Rewrite the equation (1) to get the value of d in terms of q

d=14-q

Substitute the above value into equation (2), we get

1014-q+25q=275140-10q+25q=275140+15q=27515q=275-14015q=135q=13515q=9

Substitute the above value into equation (2), we get

10d+259=27510d+225=27510d=275-22510d=50d=5010d=5

Therefore, the man has 5dimes and 9quarters.
