A man holding a lighted candle in front of thick glass mirror and viewing it obliquely sees a number of images of the candle. What is the origin of these multiple images?
The light incident on the front surface is partly reflected giving rise to a dim image. Majority of the light is refracted and then reflected from the back surface which is polished. It gives rise to a bright image. The other (dim) images arise because of the multiple reflections at the front and back surface of the mirror.
