and the present age of his son $=y$ years

According to the question,

$x=2y$ and $x-12=3(y-12)$

$\because x-12=3(y-12)$

$⟹2y-12=3y-36$

$⟹3y-2y=36-12$

$⟹y=24$

Hence, $x=2y=2\left(24\right)=48$

Let, the present age of a man $=48$ years

and the present age of his son $=24$ years
