Question

A man looks at his image in a concave mirror of 1m focal length by standing 3m away from it. Calculate the distance of the image of the man from the pole of the mirror. will the image formed be real or virtual? Also calculate the magnification, and find the image size and its nature.

Solution

Dear Student,Given,f=-1m( Focal length is negative for a concave mirror.)u=-3m ,v=?We know,1f=1u+1v-11=-13+1v1v=-1+13=-3+13=-23Therefore,v=-32=-1.5mImage is formed at 1.5m away from the mirror on the same side as the object. As 'v' is negative, image is real.(Also,if magnification m is negative, image is real)Magnification, m=-vu=--1.5-3=-0.5Also,m=height of the image hiheight of the objecth0-0.5=hih0hi=-0.5h0Thus the image is half the size of the object and as m is negative ,imageis real and inverted.Regards
