Question

A man standing on the bank of river observes that the angle subtended by a tree on the opposite bank is 600. When he retires 36 m from the bank, he finds the angle to be 300. Find the breadth of the river.

Solution

The above diagram can be drawn from the given information.
Let AB be the tree and AC be the river.
Also, let C and D be the two positions of the man.
Then, ACB=600,ADB=300 and CD=36 m [Given]
Then AD=(36+x) m
In ABD,
ABAD=tan300

h36+x=13[ tan30o=13]

h=36+x3 ....(i)

Also, in ABC,
ABAC=tan600

hx=3[ tan60o=3]

h=3x ....(ii)

From (i) and (ii), we get:
36+x3=3x

x=18 m

Hence, the breadth of the river is 18 m.
