Scale of the map = 1cm : 1000m

Distance between the two cities
= 40 km = 40,000 m
let, the distance on map be c cm

Since the given data is in proportion, we have
1 : 1000 :: c : 40000
Product of means = Product of extremes
1000 × c = 1 × 40000
c = 400001000 = 40
So, the distance between the two cities on the map is 40 cm.
