Question

a mem travels 600km to his home partly by train and bus he takes 8 hours, if he travel 120km by the train and rest by bus. further it take 20min longer if he travel 200km by the bus find the speeds of the train and the bus

Solution

Firstly, the distance 200km in second case must be done by train.

Let the speed of the train be a km/hr and speed of bus be b km/hr

Vijay travels 120 km by train, the distance covered by bus is 600-120 = 480 km

Now, time taken to cover 120 km by train = 120/a hr

And time taken to cover 480 km by bus = 480/b hr

Total time taken to travel 600 km = 120/a + 480/b = 8 hr

Similarly for the second case

Time taken by bus is 400/b hr and time by train is 200/a hr

200/a + 400/b = 8hr.20minute = 8(20/60) (ii)

solve (i) and (ii)
we get
a = 60 km/hr and b= 80 km/hr

Speed of train is 60km/hr and bus is 80km/hr
