  • When aluminum reacts with Oxygen, it forms an Aluminum oxideAl2O3 which is an amphoteric oxide i.e. it behaves as both acidic as well as basic oxide.
  • The chemical reaction can be depicted as:

Step 2: The reaction of Aluminium oxide with Hydrochloric acid:

  • When Aluminium oxideAl2O3 reacts with Hydrochloric acidHCl, it forms a salt of Aluminium which is Aluminium chlorideAlCl3 and water.
  • The chemical reaction can be depicted as:

Al2O3(s)+6HCl(aq)2AlCl3(s)+3H2O(l)

Step 3: The reaction of Aluminum oxide with Sodium hydroxide:

  • When Aluminum oxideAl2O3 reacts with Sodium hydroxideNaOH, it forms Sodium aluminateNaAlO2 and water.
  • The chemical reaction can be depicted as:

Al2O3(s)+2NaOH(aq)2NaAlO2(s)+H2O(l)
