Question

A metal pipe is 77 cm long .the inner diameter of a cross section is 4 cm, the outer diameter being 4.4 cm. find its total surface area.

Open in App
Solution

To find inner curved surface area:

Radius of inner curved surface R1=inner diameter2
=42
R1=2 cm

Height of the pipe (h)=77 cm

surface area of inner curved surface=2πR1h
=2×227×2×77
=4×22×11
=968 cm2
To find outer curved surface area:

Radius of outer curved surfaceR2=outer diameter2
=4.42
R2=2.2 cm

Height of the pipe=77 cm

Surface area of outer curved surface=2πR2h
=2×227×2.2×77
=2×22×2.2×11
=1064.8 cm2

Total surface area= inner curved surface area+outer curved surface area+2× area of base
area of base= area of circle with radius 2.2 area of circle with radius 2
=π[(R2)2(R1)2]
=π[(2.2)222]
=π[4.844]
=227×0.84

=2.64cm2

Total surface area=968+1064.8+(2×2.64)
=2032.8+5.28

=2038.08 cm2

Therefore, Total surface area =2038.08 cm2
