Question

A metal vessel of negligible heat capacity contains 0.5 kg of water (of specific heat capacity 4200 J kg1K1). It is heated from 15C to 85C by a 750 W immersion heater in 4 minutes. The average loss of heat in watts to the surroundings, from the vessel during this time, is nearly:

Solution

The correct option is C 138
Given,
Mass of water (m)=0.5 kg
Specific heat capacity of water (s)=4200 J kg1K1
Rise in temperature (Δθ)=70C

Power of heater P=750 W
P=WtW=Pt....(1)
(where W= work done by heater)

Time of heating = 4 minutes =4×60 sec
Average loss of heat (Qloss)=?

Work done by the heater will be equal to the total heat absorbed by system + heat dissipated
Pt=Qsystem+Qloss
Pt=msΔθ+Qloss
750×4×60=0.5×4200×70+Qloss
Qloss=3.3×104

Now, the rate of heat loss in 4 minutes
Ploss=Qlosst=3.3×1044×60
=137.50138 W
