A metallic sphere is placed in a uniform electric field. Which one of paths a,b,c and d shown in the figure will be followed by the field lines and why?

Solution

Electric field inside the conductor is zero. Also, since the conductor is an equipotential region, the electric field lines enter into or come out from the conductor surface at 90o.
So, line D is the correct path.
