Question

A metre scale is made up of steel and measures correct length at 16oC . What will be the percentage error if this scale is used
(a) on a summer day when the temperature is 46oC and
(b) on a winter day when the temperature is 6oC?
Coefficient of linear expansion of steel =11×106oC1

Solution

(a)

The change in length is given as,

ΔL=LαΔT

ΔLL=11×106×30

The error percentage is given as,

%e=(ΔLL×100)%

%e=(11×106×30×100)%

=3.3×102%

(b)

The change in length is given as,

ΔL=LαΔT

ΔLL=11×106×10

The error percentage is given as,

%e=(ΔLL×100)%

%e=(11×106×10×100)%

=1.1×102%

Thus, the error percentages are 3.3×102% and 1.1×102%.
