Question

A mixture containing four miscible liquids P, Q, R, and S are subjected to fractional distillation. Liquid P is distilled off first, into the receiver flask. Then S, followed by R and Q is left behind in the distillation flask. Based on the above observations, arrange the liquids in ascending order of their vapour pressures.

Solution

Distillation is a process that is used to separate liquids having different boiling point. Higher the vapor pressure, lower is the intermolecular forces and hence lower will be the boiling point. Hence the substance having the highest vapor pressure will be distilled out first. Since the order of liquids being distilled out is Q<R<S<P, this would also be the ascending order of vapor pressure of the liquids
