Question

A mixture of 10 cc of CO, 60 cc of H2, 25 cc of CH4 are mixed with 750 cc of air (20% oxygen) and ignited. Calculate the composition of the resultant mixture on cooling to room temperature.

Solution

The following reactions will take place:
2CO+O22CO2
2H2+O22H2O
CH4+2O2CO2+2H2O
Hence, 10cc of CO will react with 5cc of O2, 60cc of H2 will react with 30cc of O2 and 25cc of CH4 will react with 50cc of O2. Total O2 used = 5 + 30 + 50 = 85cc
Composition of resulting mixture = 35 (10+ 25)cc of CO2, 110 (60 + 50)cc of H2O and 665cc of air.
