A mixture of alcohol and water can separated using the apparatus above If the boiling points of alcohol and water are 78 C and 100 C respectively, water is the liquid left in Q when the temperature reaches 90 C. First alcohol is distilled out at around temperature of 78 C. It is collected in P and water is left in Q. When temperature is further raised to 100 C, water will be distilled out and collected in P.
