Question

A mixture of C2H2 and C3H8 occupied a certain volume at a pressure of 80 mm Hg. The mixture was completely burnt to form CO2 and H2O(l). If the pressure of CO2 was found to be 230 mm Hg at the same temperature and volume, then the mole fraction of C3H8 in the mixture is:

Solution

The correct option is B 0.875
Reactions are :
(i) C2H2+2.5O22CO2+H2O(l)
(ii) C3H8+5O23CO2+4H2O(l)
Since, V and T are constants, Pn.
Say, PC2H2=Pmm, then, PC3H8=(80P) mm
now, PCO2(i)=2×PC2H2=2P
PCO2(ii)=3PC3H8=3(80P)
PCO2(total)=2P+3(80P)=230 (Given)
240P=230P=10
PC3H8=8010=70 mm
mole fraction =7080=0.875
