A mixture of Ca $_{3}$ P $_{2}$ and CaC $_{2}$ , is used in making Holmes signal. This mixture reacts with water to produce phosphene and acetylene gases which burns and guides the ships in the sea. The mixture Ca $_{3}$ P $_{2}$ and CaC $_{2}$ is also used for smoke screen.
