Question

A MIXTURE OF CHLOROFORM AND ACCTONESHOWS NEGATIVE DEVIATION FROM RAOULTS LAW. EXPLAIN

Open in App
Solution

Chloroform and Acetone (CHCl3 and CH3COCH3): Acetone (or propanone) does not associate through hydrogen bonding. So, when chloroform is added to acetone, there is Hydrogen bonding between Hydrogen of chloroform and Oxygen of acetone. The presence of three chlorine atoms will not hinder the Hydrogen bonding due to the presence of electron releasing Carbon. Hence, the molecular interaction in the solution increases and there is a negative deviation.
