Sublimation is the process of transition of a substance from the soild to the gaseous state without passing the liquid state on heating and vice-versa on cooling. To separate mixtures contain a sublimate with volatile component from a non-sublimate impurity, the sublimation process is used. Naphthalene is a volatile compound whereas benzoic acis is non-volatile compond. Therefore, naphthalene sublimates easily because it is made of non- polar molecules that are held together only by Van der Waals intermolecular forces and benzoic acid remains in the mixture.
